Shaking Up Bible Prophecy (Earthquakes) - Gary DeMar

"For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains." (Matthew 24:7-8 ESV)

  1. I don't hold to the pre-trib rapture view, so I'm not looking for the rapture to occur at any moment. However, if earthquakes etc... aren't end time signs, why did Jesus bother to mention them at all?, & all in the context of "signs". Surely the term "birth pains" is a significant clue to these things being end time signs. Because just as a pregnant woman will experience bitrh pains, which will increase in frequency & magnitude until the birth occurs, we can expect to see the same with earthquakes etc... Again, why did Jesus bother to mention these things at all?

  2. @Nigel: Jesus bothered to mention earthquakes, because the disciples asked what the sign of His coming would be (Matthew 24:3). Jesus answers the question by telling the disciples not to be deceived as before the end of the age there will be great famines, wars, earthquakes, tribulation etc. Jesus was actually being rather kind to the disciples in warning them what was going to happen to them within their generation (Matthew 23:36; 24:34). History and Scripture both testify that before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD all these things came to pass. Just like Jesus said.
